Blackburn Rovers are one of a number of clubs pursuing a deal for Jacob Davenport, according to a reliable football journalist on Twitter.

Alan Nixon is reporting that Manchester City midfielder Davenport is wanted by Blackburn either on loan or permanently.

The Premier League champions have not yet decided whether to keep him and loan him out again next season or to flog him permanently.

Blackburn have put their name in the hat for his services and want to beat off a number of other clubs for the talented teenager.

The 19-year-old plays as a central midfielder and is rated as a top prospect.

In the January transfer window, Davenport completed a loan move to struggling Burton Albion, where he received his first taste of senior football.

During his half-season stint with the Brewers - who were eventually relegated on the final day of the year - he played 17 games, including 15 starts, scoring once and grabbing an assist too.

Davenport was not able to prevent Burton from suffering relegation to League One but he was part of their revival and he played a crucial role in their upturn in form which nearly saw them pull off a great escape.

Blackburn were sufficiently impressed and the newly promoted team want him for their Championship campaign.

The Verdict

Davenport has already proven his quality at Championship level, standing out for a struggling Burton Albion side.

Blackburn could definitely benefit from having him in their squad and if they could secure him on a permanent deal, then they have a terrific young talent who is only going to get better with more game time.

Davenport is expected to be a Premier League player one day but he needs to learn his trade with regular, senior football in a competitive environment at a good standard - which is something that Rovers can offer him in the Championship.
