Blackburn will likely spend the majority of the summer transfer window trying to keep hold of their best players - and one name who they seem to be desperate to tie down to the club is Ryan Nyambe.

The 24-year-old could see his contract at Ewood Park come to an end this month and that would leave him available to snap up on a free transfer if the Championship side can't agree fresh terms with him.

Time is also running out for them to get a new contract agreed with the player - but Gregg Broughton has confirmed to the Lancashire Telegraph that talks will happen between himself and the player 'very soon' and that means a deal could be sorted out one way or another.

The player has so far spent the entirety of his career with Blackburn and has racked up 183 league appearances for the club during his time there. In the last three seasons in particular, he has been a prominent member of the first-team and managed 31 showings last time out.

Considering his importance to the side then, they are understandably keen to keep hold of the 24-year-old. However, there has been no fresh deal agreed as of yet and Nyambe might soon gather some interest as he could become available on a free transfer.

However, Rovers' fans will be pleased to hear that their new director of football is planning to have a talk with the defender over a potential new deal - and if one can be agreed, then it will be a good job done by the club this summer.

Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph about the player and whether they have discussed a new deal, Broughton said: "Not yet, but that’s on the agenda, and will happen very soon. Hopefully we’ll have an answer on that shortly.

“Ryan is a top player, he can be a top, top Championship player, I think he really suits the football that Jon wants to play. We’ll sit down with him, but it’s wrong of me to put words in someone’s mouth and I haven’t had chance to speak to either Ryan or his representative."

The Verdict

Ryan Nyambe might not be considered in the same vein as Ben Brereton-Diaz or Darragh Lenihan when it comes to the importance of keeping them at the club this summer but getting a new deal agreed would still be excellent business for Blackburn.

The defender has been a key member of the first-team over the last few seasons and would be another big miss for Rovers if he was to leave Ewood Park this summer. If they lost him on a free transfer too, then it would be another blow considering how useful he has been to the club.

They would much rather get a fee for him if he was to leave - but unless they can tie up fresh terms for him before the end of June, he could enter the free market. He would be a bargain deal and a solid signing for most other teams in the division - so Rovers will be understandably keen to get fresh terms agreed.

If they can tie his future down to the club, then it would be a smart move by the side.
