Blackburn Rovers defender Greg Cunningham is set to face a number of months on the sidelines, after confirming that scans have revealed he has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The 28-year-old sustained the injury in the first half of Saturday's 4-2 defeat at Queens Park Rangers and scan results have revealed that he is set for a lengthy spell out of action.

Cunningham joined Blackburn on a season-long loan from Championship rivals Cardiff City on transfer deadline day and has been a key player for Tony Mowbray's side so far this season.

The full-back has made ten appearances for Blackburn in all competitions since his arrival at Ewood Park and had impressed fans with his performances at the back.

Cunningham delivered the injury news with a message on social media, admitting that he is gutted to be facing time on the sidelines and that he is already looking forward to the early stages of his recovery.

Blackburn are currently 14th in the Championship table are without a victory in their last four league matches. Rovers will be looking to return to winning ways against Huddersfield Town after the international break.

The Verdict

This is a major blow for Blackburn. Cunningham has been an important player for Rovers so far this season and has impressed fans since arriving at the club from Cardiff, so it's a major blow that he's set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

His injury is likely to give Amari’i Bell, who replaced Cunningham at Loftus Road at the weekend, a chance to reclaim his place in the side and he's got to make sure that he makes the most of that opportunity.
