Blackburn Rovers on course to secure 23-year-old’s service

Blackburn Rovers are closing in on the signing of Brighton goalkeeper Christian Walton on loan, according to journalist Brian Owen.

The 23-year-old shot-stopper has made four appearances for Brighton and has spent the past two seasons on loan at Wigan Athletic.

Owen confirmed that Brighton rate the goalkeeper highly for the future and easily could have sold him this summer if they wanted to, after he attracted interest from several clubs.

Walton made 31 appearances for Wigan in League One in 2017/18, conceding 19 goals and keeping an impressive 19 clean sheets – the highest in the division – as the Latics won the title.

The highly-rated goalkeeper returned to the DW Stadium on another season-long loan last term and kept nine clean sheets in 34 league appearances, helping Paul Cook’s side retain their Championship status.

Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray is looking for a new goalkeeper this summer, after David Raya left the club to join Brentford earlier in the transfer window.

Rovers finished 15th in the Championship table last season on their return to the second tier, 14 points outside the play-off places but comfortably clear of the relegation zone.

The Verdict

This could be a good signing for Blackburn and a decent replacement for Raya. He’s a very talented goalkeeper and has already got plenty of experience in the EFL with Wigan.

He is obviously rated highly for the future, otherwise Brighton would have chosen to sell him this summer rather than send him out on loan.

The fact that several other teams were interested in signing him speaks volumes about his quality and he should be able to make an impact for Blackburn next season.
