Blackburn Rovers are within touching distance of signing Southampton striker Sam Gallagher, with the Saints man completing a medical and agreeing terms ahead of a move to Ewood Park.

According to Sky Sports' live transfer blog, the 23-year-old is all set to complete a move back to Lancashire, where he spent a fruitful loan spell during the 16/17 campaign.

Gallagher knocked in 12 goals in all competitions for Rovers that season, and he will be hoping to rediscover that sort of form after finding it hard to break into the Southamtpon line up in recent seasons.

The striker's last spell out on loan was with Birmingham City, but he failed to hit the net regularly and subsequently moved back to Sty Mary's with the hope of breaking into the first-team.

However, Gallagher has once again failed to make the grade under new manager Ralph Hassenhutl, and he looks set to finally seal a move away from the Premier League club and find himself back at Ewood Park in the Championship.

Blackburn are looking to build on a steady first season back in the Championship last term, where they finished 15th following their promotion from League One.

Gallagher will be hoping to once again flourish under Tony Mowbray as he looks to finally get his career on track after seeing his progress stall somewhat since breaking into the Saints team as a teenager.

The Verdict

Blackburn will be pleased to get this one over the line finally and it's a signing which should have a positive impact for Rovers.

Gallagher is certainly a player who is more than capable of performing and scoring goals, but he just needs to get some regular and consistent game time under his belt you would assume.

If Mowbray can get Gallagher firing, then Rovers could well have their eyes on a top ten finish as the look to keep progressing.
