Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has suggested that Sam Gallagher will be set to miss out on Rovers’ trip to Charlton Athletic at the weekend, but that he could be available to return the following week, after he missed the 3-0 win over Hull City.

Gallagher was added to Blackburn’s ever lengthening injury list ahead of their clash with Hull at Ewood Park on Tuesday night, with the 24-year-old having suffered a problem with his groin during training earlier in the week.

However, Rovers were still able to find a way to finish up comfortable 3-0 winners against Hull, which saw them move to within three points of the play-off places, and they will be hoping that Gallagher can make a swift return to action to help boost their attacking numbers in the coming weeks.

Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph following the win against Hull, Mowbray suggested that Gallagher missed out on the game after picking up a groin injury in training, but he believes he should be back in action in the next two weeks, saying: "Gallagher came off after training (on Monday), he started the session but then came off, he’s got a groin issue.

"I don’t think it’s a bad one, but he’ll probably miss the weekend.

"That’s a blow. He’s a huge physical presence and we had to find a way to win and thankfully we did without Gallagher, without Dack, without Rothwell, without Holtby, without Evans, all players that could potentially have been in the starting line-up."

The verdict

This update will be somewhat reassuring to Blackburn supporters, who would have been fearing another potential lengthy injury to one of their attacking players, to add to the list of the likes of Bradley Dack, Joe Rothwell, Lewis Holtby and Joe Rankin-Costello, who are currently sidelined.

Gallagher, whilst not being prolific in front of goal, has been an important player for Rovers so far this campaign, with the 24-year-old offering the ability to play either up front as the main centre forward, or also out wide, which has provided Mowbray with some tactical flexibility throughout the campaign.

Mowbray would have been fearing the worst when the forward was forced to miss out on the Hull clash, but it now appears that he should be back in action over the next few weeks, which will allow the Blackburn manager to continue to have the option of somewhat rotating his forward options.

Given Blackburn’s lengthy injury list to some of their most creative attacking players, Rovers produced a really encouraging display to come out 3-0 winners against Hull, and with Gallagher back fit in a few weeks Mowbray’s side could yet make a surprise bid to finish inside the top six this term.
