Championship side Blackburn Rovers are targeting a move for Dutch international midfielder Adam Maher.

According to a report from the Lancashire Telegraph, Rovers are eyeing up the 25-year-old, who is set to leave current club AZ Alkmaar on a free transfer during the summer.

Maher, who plays across a variety of midfield positions if needed, is a well known name in the Dutch league after spells with the likes of PSV and FC Twente, and he has also made an impact at international level, gaining himself five caps for the Oranges.

Rovers manager Tony Mowbray is looking to strengthen his squad at Ewood Park this summer after a successful return to the Championship which saw them secure a mid-table finish with relative ease.

Maher would fit the bill perfectly for Mowbray, who is looking to add players of sufficient quality to the ranks as he looks to progress Rovers towards a push towards the top six next term.

The midfielder was a regular for the Dutch under-21's when breaking through into first-team football, racking up over 20 caps before being given his chance in the full national set up.

Maher is thought to be keen on a move to England as he looks to further his career, and could well see Blackburn as the ideal club to join to make the leap into the English game.

The Verdict

This would be a superb and shrewd piece of business for Rovers if they can pull it off.

Signing a player of Maher's quality would be a massive boost to the club as they look to cement themselves as Championship force, and his experience and quality speaks for itself.

If Mowbray pulls this off, it would be a fine piece of business for the club.
