Blackburn Rovers keeping tabs on Oxford United man ahead of upcoming campaign

Blackburn Rovers are keeping tabs on Oxford United midfielder Cameron Brannagan ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, according to a report from the Lancashire Telegraph.

It is understood that the 26-year-old is currently on Rovers’ radar as they aim to strengthen their squad before the transfer window closes in September.

Blackburn could potentially face competition from Queens Park Rangers if they opt to try and secure Brannagan’s services as Michael Beale’s side are believed to be keen on a move for the midfielder.

Rovers will be able to make some more moves for players this summer as money for transfer fees has been made available for manager Jon Dahl Tomasson by the club’s hierarchy.

Tomasson bolstered Blackburn’s options at right-back by signing Callum Brittain from Barnsley yesterday.

Whereas Blackburn haven’t disclosed the fee that they paid for Brittain, it is understood that the overall package including add-ons exceeds £1m.

Brannagan’s current deal with Oxford is set to run until 2023 and thus a potential suitor will need to submit a reasonable offer for the midfielder in order to test the League One side’s resolve.

A stand-out performer for the U’s last season, the midfielder produced a host of impressive attacking displays in the third-tier.

In the 41 appearances that he made for Oxford at this level, Brannagan scored 14 goals and provided three assists for his team-mates.

The Verdict

When you consider that Blackburn are no longer able to turn to the likes of Joe Rothwell, Bradley Johnson and Jacob Davenport, they may need to add to their options in the heart of midfield between now and the end of the window.

Brannagan could turn out to be a good fit for Rovers as he is currently playing the best football of his career and will be confident in his ability to make the step up to the Championship.

As well as providing 17 direct goal contributions in League One last season, Brannagan also made 2.3 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game as he averaged an impressive WhoScored match rating of 7.12 at this level.

If Blackburn are able to convince Oxford to sell Brannagan, there is every chance that the midfielder could go on to become a key player for the club when he eventually adapts to life in the second-tier.
