Blackburn Rovers are in advanced talks to sign Cardiff City defender Greg Cunningham on loan, according to Football Insider.

The 28-year-old left-back is currently out of favour at Cardiff and made just eight appearances for the Bluebirds in all competitions last season.

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock does not regard the player as part of his plans for the coming season and is prepared to allow him to leave on loan.

A number of Championship clubs are interested in signing the left-back, but this latest report states that Blackburn are close to agreeing a deal with Cardiff, with Tony Mowbray keen to strengthen his defensive options before the transfer deadline.

Blackburn finished 15th in the Championship last season and will be hoping to challenge further up the table this term, although they lost their opening game of their new campaign 2-1 to Charlton Atheltic at Ewood Park.

The Verdict

Cunningham made just eight appearances for Cardiff last season and he probably isn't going to get much of a chance in the team at left-back this season ahead of Joe Bennett, so it would make sense for him to leave the club in search of regular first-team football.

With that said, he's still a good player and has got plenty of experience in the Championship for several different clubs over the years.

He could be a decent signing for most teams in the division, including Blackburn, although they will need to get a move on if they are to get the deal finalised before the transfer deadline.
