Blackburn Rovers are hopeful that manager Tony Mowbray's relationship with Stewart Downing could give them the advantage in the race to sign the recently released Middlesbrough midfielder Stewart Downing, The Lancashire Telegraph have reported.

It was confirmed last week that Downing is not set to be offered a new contract by Middlesbrough, with Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie claiming that Rovers, along with Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday and Scottish side Rangers, are all interested in the midfield veteran.

Downing made over 400 appearances for 'Boro over two spells with the club in 12 years at The Riverside Stadium, and Rovers are hopeful that Mowbray, himself a former player and manager at 'Boro, will be able to swing the deal in their favour.

Speaking to The Lancashire Telegraph, Rovers' CEO Steve Waggot revealed: “We have a relatively young squad and I think Tony will be looking at some experienced players.

“Obviously he has known Stewart for a while.

“If he is going to be on the move then hopefully the relationship Tony and Mark (Venus) have with him, and him knowing them, might put us in a strong position.”

The verdict

This could be a key factor for Rovers if they are to win the race for Downing.

The club are unlikely to be able to offer wages in a similar wage bracket to those of Rangers, so they may need to look for other advantages if they are to bring Downing to Ewood Park.

Given the popularity that Mowbray appears to have amongst those who know him, that could well be one that Rovers need to capitalise on if they are to convince Downing they are the right destination for him.
