Sky Bet Championship side Blackburn Rovers have signed Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Christian Walton on a season-long loan deal, the club have now confirmed.

Tony Mowbray would have been on the lookout for a new shot-stopper, having lost David Raya to fellow Championship side Brentford earlier on this summer.

But the Lancashire club have now bolstered their options in between the sticks with the loan signing of Walton, who recently underwent a successful medical at Ewood Park.

The former England Under-21 international has enjoyed two hugely impressive loan spells with Wigan Athletic over the last couple of years, establishing himself as one of the best young goalkeepers in the EFL during his time at the DW Stadium.

He kept 19 clean sheets as the Latics won promotion from League One in 2018, which was the highest amount in the division. He also played an integral role in helping them avoid an immediate relegation last time out.

Derby County had also been credited with an interest in the 23-year-old, who still has two years left on his current deal with the Seagulls.

As well as impressive loan spells with Luton and Southend, Walton, who has made only four first-team appearances for Brighton, will now be looking to help Rovers push for a play-off finish in 2019/20.

The Verdict

I think that this is an excellent signing for Blackburn, especially to beat Wigan to his services considering how well he has done there in recent times.

I remember watching him when he was on loan with Luton - he brings such a calming influence in between the sticks, and commands his area and his goal with ease due to his physical presence.

He has already achieved a lot in his career, and at the age of 23, he still has a lot of time to develop. He will prove to be an excellent signing for Blackburn.
