Blackburn Rovers face a potential defensive crisis, with Charlie Mulgrew and Darragh Lenihan facing time out of the first-team, reports the club’s official website.

Tony Mowbray’s side were one of the only clubs in Sky Bet League One not in action last week due to the international break, but they look set to return to action this weekend without two influential players.

Mulgrew was substituted in Scotland’s 2-0 victory over Malta last night, with it unclear whether the Blackburn captain will be fit for the weekend’s clash with Rochdale.

The Scottish international is not Rovers’ only defensive casualty, with Lenihan undergoing an operation on a broken foot, which will keep the defender out of action for months.

Lenihan has been limited to just one appearance so far this season, but Mulgrew has been ever-present for Rovers in their League One campaign, helping his side pick up six-points from their opening four fixtures.

The 31-year-old has scored three goals from his four appearances, including two in the 4-1 victory over MK Dons over the August bank holiday weekend.

Mowbray’s side now face back-to-back away fixtures in the coming week, with Rovers travelling to both Rochdale and Scunthorpe United.

The Verdict

Mulgrew’s injury is worrying news for Blackburn, particularly with Lenihan facing a lengthy spell out of the first-team as he recovers from his injury.

The Scottish defender has been magnificent so far this season for Blackburn, and if they are to instantly bounce back into the Championship, he will be key for Mowbray’s side.

Blackburn now face an anxious wait, with the hope that Mulgrew’s injury will not be serious and he will be in contention sooner rather than later.
