Blackburn Rovers eyeing loan swoop for Premier League defender

Manchester City’s Philippe Sandler is a rumoured target for Championship side Blackburn Rovers, according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon.

The 24-year-old has been with Manchester City since 2018, but is yet to make an appearance for their first-team, having previously been on the books with Dutch side Ajax earlier in his career.

It is claimed (15th August, page 63) that the Premier League side are looking to loan him out for the 2021/22 campaign, and Blackburn have emerged as a potential destination for him.

The Lancashire-based side have a strong relationship with Manchester City it seems, after previously having Taylor Harwood-Bellis on loan at Ewood Park during the 2020/21 season.

Tony Mowbray’s side are currently sat sixth in the Championship table, and recently drew 1-1 with Millwall, with Ben Brereton’s goal 14 minutes from time cancelling out Jed Wallace’s opener on the day.

Sandler has one year remaining on his contract with Manchester City, and will be looking to find himself regular game time in senior football at the earliest of opportunities.

Blackburn are set to return to action on Wednesday evening, when they travel to the City Ground to take on struggling Nottingham Forest, who have lost both of their opening two league matches this term.

The Verdict:

He could be worth a punt for Blackburn this summer.

Sandler’s move to English football hasn’t gone as he would have hoped for, but a move to Ewood Park with Tony Mowbray’s side could prove to be the ideal opportunity for him to make a name for himself in English football.

Additional strength in depth at centre-back is always going to be welcome after Taylor Harwood-Bellis returned to Manchester City at the end of last year’s league campaign.

It wouldn’t come as a surprise to not see him involved in the starting XI straight away, but he’s got a point to prove, and Blackburn will be hoping to get the best out of the 24-year-old this term, as they target a top-half finish.
