Blackburn Rovers could make a move for Oxford United midfielder Joe Rothwell this summer, according to The Lancashire Telegraph.

Rothwell was a target for Blackburn in previous transfer windows and they could reignite their interest in him during this close season.

Tony Mowbray is thinking of ways of strengthening his side on a shoestring budget ahead of their upcoming Premier League campaign and Rothwell would be available on a free transfer - although Oxford would be owed some compensation due to his age.

The 23-year-old is out of contract at Oxford and is set to turn down an offer of an extension to consider his future away from the Kassam Stadium.

Blackburn could swoop for the former Manchester United youngster, who has played 76 senior games already in his career despite his young age.

Rovers are considering the former England youth international as well as Manchester City youngster Jacob Davenport, who spent the latter half of last season on loan at Burton Albion.

Rothwell's central midfield partner Ryan Ledson has already departed Oxford this summer to join Preston North End and now Rothwell could be the next man to step up to the Championship and join a Lancashire based side.

The Verdict

This could end up being a very good signing for Rovers.

Rothwell provides the perfect balance of youth and experience and his best years are still ahead of him.

For a small compensation fee, this could work out for the club and the player is likely to get quite a bit of game time at Championship level next year if he signs up.
