Blackburn Rovers have confirmed the signing of Derby County midfielder Bradley Johnson on a free transfer.

The experienced Championship midfielder arrives at Ewood Park on a two-year deal and becomes their third signing of the summer following the arrival of Stewart Downing and Joe Hilton.

Johnson played a key role in Derby's run to the Championship play-off final last season, racking up 28 appearances in the second-tier, scoring two goals and assisting three more.

The 32-year-old boasts plenty of experience in the Championship having accumulated over 200 appearances across spells with Norwich City, Leeds United and the Rams.

The summer transfer window of 2015 saw Derby splash over £7million on the then Norwich man as Paul Clement looked to build a side capable of winning promotion.

Last season saw Tony Mowbray's side finish in a respectable 15th place in their first season since winning promotion back from League One at the first time of asking.

14 points separated them from Johnson's former side come the end of the season as the Rams snatched the final place in the top-six.

The verdict

I think this is a solid signing from Blackburn but only if they have not paid over the odds to bring him in.

Johnson is undoubtedly a decent Championship midfielder and his experience could be invaluable, but we saw towards the end of last season that he is far from the player he once was.

Yes, Mowbray needed some more second-tier experience, and in Downing and Johnson he now has that, I just hope for their summer's sake that both are on reasonable wages.
