Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has admitted that he will be rotating his squad for the club's Carabao Cup clash with Oldham Athletic on Tuesday.

Rovers suffered their second defeat of the 2019/20 campaign on Saturday at the hands of Fulham and will be aiming to get off the mark for the year against their League Two opponents at Ewood Park.

Speaking to the club's official website about the upcoming fixture, Mowbray said: "The plan is to utilise the squad and the early rounds of this competition is to give some of your squad players a game.

"When I say squad players I mean players who are disappointed to have not started the opening two games of the season. Tuesday night is an opportunity to show me that they should be starting league games.

"I’ve said to the group today that they need to try and grab their chance and to make my life more difficult when it comes to selecting the team on Saturday and beyond.

"There’s an opportunity there for the strikers to score some goals. We’ve got to score goals and people will be given a chance, so we will see if they can do that."

Having reached the third round in the Carabao Cup last season, Rovers will be looking to match or even exceed this feat during the current campaign.

The Verdict

Following what has been an extremely lacklustre start to the season for Blackburn, a meeting with Oldham could turn out to be the perfect distraction for Mowbray's side providing that they can beat their lower league opponents convincingly on Tuesday.

Whereas it could be considered to be a risk by some for the Rovers boss to shuffle his pack, it may pay off as those coming into the starting eleven will have a point to prove and thus will be determined to deliver an eye-catching performance.

If Blackburn can secure a big win over an Oldham side who have lost both of their League Two fixtures this season, it could provide the club with the confidence needed to secure their first Championship points of the campaign against Middlesbrough on Saturday at Ewood Park.
