Blackburn Rovers picked up a much-needed three points as they beat Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday 2-1 at Ewood Park.

Heading into the game, Tony Mowbray's side were without a win in their last six league games which saw them slide down the Championship table at an alarming rate.

But Rovers struck late on courtesy of goals from Tosin Adarabioyo and John Buckley to secure the win, which came after Jacob Murphy had given the Owls the lead.

Blackburn had Christian Walton to thank for the win, as he produced a stunning stop to prevent Sam Hutchinson from equalising in stoppage-time.

Speaking to Blackburn's official website following the win, Tony Mowbray singled out praise for Walton following his performance on the day, as he responded to a mistake against Preston last week in the best way possible.

"For Christian to make that amazing save right at the end, it was great for him and it kept it at 2-1 instead of 2-2.

"He deserves credit, because he was at fault for the first goal at Preston last week in my opinion and for him to help us achieve the result today is good."

The Blackburn boss went on to praise Manchester City loanee Tosin Adarabioyo for his performance in the win over Garry Monk's side, and revealed what he said to the young defender before the game.

"Tosin scored a goal and he was magnificent. We’ve struggled against teams who play direct football against us and today I told him he had to stand up and be counted and be the man who heads the ball.

"It’s underestimated how important heading the ball back over the halfway line from goal-kicks is and that’s what he did for us today and scored as well. So I’m delighted with him."

The win moves Blackburn up to 16th in the Championship table, and Mowbray will be hoping that his side can kick on and push themselves up the table as quickly as possible.

Rovers are next in action on Saturday when they take on Leeds United at Elland Road, in what is certain to be one of their toughest tests of the season to date.

Marcelo Bielsa's side are currently sat second in the Championship and will be keen to build on an impressive performance against QPR at the weekend which saw them move into the automatic promotion places.

The Verdict:

The pair played a starring role in the win over Sheffield Wednesday.

Adarabioyo has impressed me for Blackburn and I think he could go on to be a crucial member of Tony Mowbray's squad as the season progresses.

I'll be the first to admit that I wasn't sure whether Walton would be good enough to fill the sizeable void left by David Raya in the summer, but he's starting to show his quality and won Blackburn the points with an excellent save right at the death against the Owls.
