According to the Lancashire Telegraph, Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Mowbray, who has seen his side lose their opening two league matches following their relegation to League 1, has said that he hopes new Rovers striker Marcus Antonsson can make a 'big impact' at Ewood Park, following his arrival from Championship outfit Leeds United.

Antonsson joined the former Premier League champions on a season-long loan deal from Elland Road last week, but is yet to make his Ewood Park bow.

Mowbray was keen to talk up his new arrival and hopes that he can net the goals to fire Rovers to a successful season, firing them up the league after a poor start to the season.

"It’s down to him. But he wants to prove that he can be successful in England, he wants to prove that he can score goals when given the chance and that’s what we aim to do. We’ll give him an opportunity moving forward. There’s a lot of games to share around and hopefully he can make a big impact."

Speaking about what he has told Antonsson, Mowbray provided an amusing response, "I’m not telling him he’s going to be the King of Blackburn - he has to work hard, score goals, be part of a team and wait for his chances. I haven't given him any false promises."

On the subject of the Swedish striker's strengths, former Middlesbrough boss Mowbray said, "He knows where the back of the net is. He’s got two good feet - he’s predominantly left-footed and yet he scores a lot of goals with his right foot as well. He controls and plays the ball off his right side very easily and comfortably."

"And he’s got a lovely personality," Mowbray concluded.

The Verdict:

Few things get fans as excited as a signing from a higher division or a striker who can score goals - and Marcus Antonsson ticks both boxes.

Add in the fact that the Swede has a point to prove and it is easy to see why Mowbray has been so effusive in his praise for his new frontman.

Mowbray will be hoping that Antonsson can inspire an upturn in the form of his Blackburn players, but he will need all the service that a side who is so far struggling to gel can muster.
