Jack Rodwell is preparing to see his Blackburn Rovers contract expire in the summer after a mixed season at Ewood Park.

The former Manchester City midfielder has made 21 league appearances for Tony Mowbray's side this campaign, after making the switch from relegated Sunderland last summer.

He enjoyed a prolonged run in the Rovers side earlier this year and has regained his place in recent weeks, but his season has also featured a string of injuries and spells out the side.

It has now emerged that Rodwell is the subject of interest from Torino and Sassuolo this summer with his future remaining unclear, according to Lancashire Telegraph.

Rodwell has been deployed as a utility man this season by largely featuring at centre-back, but he has moved back into midfield in recent weeks.

Mowbray admitted he is relaxed about the former England international's future which suggests a move away from Blackburn is a possibility.

“I’m pretty relaxed about Jack’s situation and I think he and his agents are," the Rovers boss told Lancashire Telegraph.

“If he’s already been talking to other clubs behind the scenes then that’s fine, let them do that.

“I can’t affect that. But if they want to talk about a new deal here and it’s something we feel is right within the parameters of what we can do then we’ll discuss that.”

Blackburn will host Swansea City on Sunday in their final game of the season, and it is expected that Rodwell will hold discussions with the Rovers hierarchy once that match is completed.

The Verdict

A Ligue 1 move could benefit both parties in this instance.

Rodwell has had a solid, if not spectacular, season at the Lancashire outfit, but a move to the continent could benefit his career after a difficult period playing in England.

His departure could also create space on the wage bill for Rovers to add a string of new recruits, as they look to challenge higher up the league next season.
