Blackburn Rovers are interested in Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow, Sky Sports transfer centre (05/07, 13;53) has reported.

The goalkeeper has made 59 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies since his arrival at the club in the summer of 2015, but he struggled for opportunities behind Martin Dubravka at St James' Park last season, with his only appearance of the campaign coming in August's League Cup second round defeat to his former club Nottingham Forest.

It looks inevitable that Rovers will have to head into the market for a goalkeeper this summer, after Sky Sports transfer centre (05/07, 08:51) reported that David Raya, who has been the club's number one for the past two seasons is set for a medical with Championship rivals Brentford on Friday ahead of a move said to be worth £3million.

Rovers are thought to be keen to bring in an experienced goalkeeper to replace the Spaniard, although they have yet to make an official offer for Darlow to Newcastle.

There are just 12 months remaining on Darlow's contract at St James' Park, meaning this could be the Magpies final chance to cash in on him.

The verdict

I think this is something Blackburn should definitely consider pursuing.

There is little doubt that Rovers will need to add a goalkeeper in the window following Raya's departure, with Jayson Leutwiler - who has just six league appearances in his two years at Ewood Park - set to be the only senior goalkeeper still at the club.

Darlow has bags of experience in the Championship, even winning promotion from the division with Newcastle a couple of years ago, so there should be absolutely no qualms about him stepping into Raya's position.

You feel that Darlow himself could be open to a move such as this. He has struggled for game time recently at Newcastle, and at 28-years-old he will want to be playing as much as possible as he enters the peak years of his career, and a move to Blackburn should offer him the chance to do that given their current situation.
