Blackburn have confirmed that Stewart Downing has returned to the club after he agreed a deal for this season.

The midfielder impressed for Rovers last season but with his contract expiring over the summer, no fresh terms were agreed and Tony Mowbray has began the campaign without the ex-England international.

However, talks have been taking place and the club announced on their official site that the left-footer is now signed up.

The 36-year-old is immediately available for selection and is expected to be in the 18 as Blackburn take on Downing's former club Middlesbrough tomorrow night at Ewood Park.

After a positive start to the season, Rovers have now suffered four defeats in five games, slipping into the bottom half of the table as a result.

So, Downing's addition to the group will be very welcome for Mowbray as he looks to build a team that is capable of challenging for the top six.

The former Liverpool man played 41 times, scoring twice, for Blackburn in the 19/20 campaign and his versatility was an important asset to the side.

The verdict

It was a surprise to see Downing leave in the summer as he had done very well and it seemed like a deal that just worked for both parties.

But, he's back now and he will expect to play a big role once again in the future as he was crucial last season.

For Mowbray, he is adding a player with great experience and someone who will feature in various positions, so it makes total sense.
