Blackburn Rovers finished this season in second place in League One, two points short of title winners Wigan Athletic, but enough to see them promoted to the Championship.

Tony Mowbray’s side will be hoping to keep their good form into next year’s Championship season, and with the right signings, could go under the radar as title contenders.

Rovers ended the season with a quartet of players featuring in the League One Team of the Season, with Charlie Mulgrew, Amari’i Bell, Bradley Dack and Danny Graham all included.

The Rovers finished this season second top goal scorers in the league, behind Wigan, with an impressive 82 goals in their 46 matches. But, despite their strong goal tally, it won’t just be at the back they will be looking to build on for next season.

Here are three deals - which if they should manage to go for - that could see Blackburn Rovers spring a Championship surprise next season.

The 28-year-old attacking midfielder bagged himself a healthy 16 goals this season in all competitions, but after falling just short of the play-off places with Plymouth Argyle, could make the perfect signing for Tony Mowbray’s side.

The Republic of Ireland international has one year left on his contract at Home Park, but finishing the Pilgrim’s top goal scorer this campaign has brought attention to Carey.

Carey would give Bradley Dack not only some competition, but also a new midfield partnership.

The young defender played 38 times for Doncaster Rovers this season in a defensive line which only conceded 52 goals; an impressive feat for a side that finished 15th in League One.

The 23-year-old Wales Under-21 international, despite being young, could be one for the future for Tony Mowbray’s side. Wright has one year left on his contract at Ewood Park and could be the fresh legs at the back that Blackburn need.

The former England international lost out on the chance to play in the Premier League after Derby County’s 2-1 loss on aggregate to Fulham in the Championship play-off semi-final earlier this week. But, one positive for the Rams was the performance of goalkeeper Scott Carson.

Carson could provide the knowledge between the sticks it takes to get Blackburn to England’s top flight, if they managed to make a good enough offer. With David Martin Raya just 22-years-old, bringing in an experienced goalkeeper could give them that extra bit of quality needed to see themselves promoted two years in a row.
