Here's why Blackburn Rovers are not just in the Championship to make up the numbers next season.

Finishing second with an impressive 96 points, last season was a very strong one for Rovers down in League One. But they may do more in the Championship than merely survive, given some good transfer business and the quality of players they have at their disposal.

Former Oxford United player Joe Rothwell has joined up with Blackburn for an undisclosed fee. The former Manchester United man possesses serious quality on the ball and should be able to easily make the step up to the Championship. A signing the standard of Rothwell hints that there may be more exciting transfer news at Ewood Park in the coming weeks

The quality that Blackburn Rovers already have at the club should easily be able to adapt to Championship life. Players such as Bradley Dack, up there with the most gifted players in League One, will be relishing the opportunity to prove themselves at a higher level. Experienced players like Peter Whittingham and Charlie Mulgrew will also help Rovers make an easy transition into the league above, with plenty of the squad having played at Championship level before.

Tony Mowbray might want to consider bolstering his attacking options before the new campaign begins. Danny Graham is another player who has Championship experience, but he is ageing and more options are needed for the Lancashire club going forward. We have seen clubs like Southampton, Norwich City and Wolves have fantastic seasons after winning promotion from the third tier in the past, and Blackburn Rovers could well end up being in their company if they make more smart additions this summer.
