The news that Blackburn Rovers are interested in signing Oxford United midfielder Joe Rothwell is promising for Rovers fans.

The club had previously been linked to the 23-year old in January, but were put off by the fee demanded by the Oxfordshire side. However, Rothwell will now be able to be snapped up a discount rate as his contract is set to expire this summer.

The Englishman was a product of the Manchester United youth academy, but never played for the first team. Nonetheless, he was a regular throughout the England youth set-up, featuring from the Under-16s to the Under-20s. His decision to move to Oxford paid off as he started to see regular first-team action. Last season he pushed on, playing a part in 8 goals. His fitness and ability to keep going was ably demonstrated as he produced assists to dramatic late winners against Doncaster Rovers and Bristol Rovers. While he still has a way to go in his development, he looks ready to make the step-up to the Championship.

The manner in which they waltzed to automatic promotion suggested a side that will be able to look after themselves on their return to the second tier. Nonetheless, Tony Mowbray will be under no illusions over the challenge Rovers will be up against. The Championship is a league that requires desire and energy. This is something that Rothwell will be able to provide in spades. Should he kick on with his development, he could be worth even more.
