Blackburn Rovers have today announced the signing of forward Adam Armstrong who will join the club on loan until the end of the season.

The Newcastle United forward had spent the first half of the season on-loan at Bolton however he struggled to get regular games, contributing mainly as a substitute and only having one goal to his name so far this season.

Yet, the 20-year old will surely be relishing the chance to link up with manager Tony Mowbray again having excelled under the Rovers boss during a spell at Coventry City in the 2015/16 season.

Playing in the third tier, Armstrong scored 20 goals for the Sky Blues and his consistency saw him earn a place in the PFA League One Team of the Year for that season. As well as that, he signed a new four-year contract with boyhood club Newcastle after returning.

Since then he has had two spells in the Championship, with Barnsley last season before linking up with Bolton in the summer.

He will go straight into the Rovers squad for the crunch clash against high-flying Shrewsbury at Ewood Park this Saturday.

The Verdict

This is a fantastic signing for Blackburn particularly given the connection that Mowbray has with the player following that superb season at Coventry.

The manager will know how to get the best out of him and should be able to give Armstrong regular football, something he has struggled for since that loan spell.

The fight for an automatic promotion place is going to be tough for Blackburn but this signing could play a key role as the season progresses.
