Blackburn and QPR's plans for the summer transfer window, after it was reported by De Telegraaf that midfield target Adam Maher is set to join Dutch side FC Utrecht.

The publication had reported over the weekend that both Championship sides, as well as Scottish champions Celtic, had been interested in signing the midfielder, who is set to become a free agent after turning down the chance to sign a new contract with current side AZ Alkmaar.

Now however it looks as though Maher is set to stay in Holland, after De Telegraaf reported that the appointment of the midfielder's former Alkmaar manager John Van den Brom as Utrecht boss has put them in pole position to sign the 25-year-old.

Maher, who has been capped five times by the Netherlands, only rejoined Alkmaar last season, having previously had a brief spell with FC Twente after his departure from PSV in 2018, where he won two Dutch top flight titles during his five years with the Eindhoven side.

The verdict

This will be seen as a blow for both sides.

Maher quality and experience is clear from his record, and he would have been a quality addition in the Championship for either of these sides.

With neither club yet to really get going in the transfer market yet, the chance to sign a player such as Maher on a free transfer could have kick started their summer.
