Blackburn, Derby and Barnsley are all interested in a move for Doncaster midfielder Ben Whiteman, a report from Football Insider has claimed.
Whiteman initially joined Doncaster on loan from Sheffield United back in the summer of 2017, before making his move to the Keepmoat Stadium permanent the following January.
In total, Whiteman has made 126 appearances in all competitions for Doncaster, scoring 17 goals and producing a string of impressive, reputation-enhancing performances that appear to have caught the eye of several clubs further up the football pyramid.
According to the latest reports, Blackburn, Derby and Barnsley are said to have identified Whiteman as a potential target in the closing days of the January transfer window, with all three keen to add to their midfield options this month.
Blackburn have yet to make a signing in the current window, while the only deal completed by Derby has been confirmation of Wayne Rooney’s eligibility to play for the club.
Barnsley meanwhile have already added two players to their ranks in the current window, with midfielder Marcel Ritzmaier joining permanently from Wolfsberger, and full-back Kilian Ludewig moving to Oakwell on loan until the end of the season from Red Bull Salzburg.
Whiteman only signed a new contract with Doncaster in November, which has secured his future with the League One side until the summer of 2023.
This could be a really useful deal for one of these three Championship sides.
Whiteman has been hugely impressive for Doncaster ever since his arrival at the club, and you do feel as though he is ready to make the step up to the second-tier, after several years at League One level.
It will be interesting to see which of these clubs Whiteman chooses, although you could argue that Barnsley’s position in the Championship relegation zone makes either Blackburn or Derby a more attractive proposition for the midfielder at the minute.
Doncaster however, will understandably be determined not to lose one of their key players this month, and are in no pressure to do so here given Whiteman’s current contract situation, meaning it could take a big offer from one of these sides to prise him away from the Keepmoat Stadium.
