Blackburn and Bristol Rovers emerge as potential destinations for defender

Blackburn Rovers and Bristol Rovers are set to run the rule over Drogheda United right-back James Brown over the next few weeks, according to the Irish Independent

The report reveals that the League of Ireland Premier Division side could be set to lose four players to clubs in England and Scotland.

Among those is Brown, with the 23-year-old said to be set to train with Blackburn and Bristol Rovers in the next few weeks.

The right-back has impressed for the Drogs over the past two seasons, with his two goals and 11 assists proof that he has quality going forward as well as defensively.

Brown joined the Irish top tier side in January 2019 having started his professional career at Shelbourne after coming through the club’s academy system.

Which club did Blackburn sign Ben Brereton from?

The Verdict

You have to feel this is a low-risk high-reward decision from both sides as Brown could well prove to be a shrewd signing.

Given the size of the club and their Championship status, Blackburn would seem to be the favourites for Brown but opportunities are likely to be harder to come by at Ewood Park.

Ryan Nyambe is Tony Mowbray’s clear first choice at right-back meaning the Irishman would likely be battling with 22-year-old Joe Rankin-Costello and 19-year-old Dan Pike for a place in the pecking order.

That may mean that Brown prefers to join up with Bristol Rovers in League Two, where he could well be a regular starter.

Joey Barton has switched between options on the right side of defence this season, so the Irishman may back himself to battle his way into the starting XI from the off.
