Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has extended his contract at the club, just hours after owner Roland Duchatelet announced the two parties had failed to reach an agreement.

The club's Belgian owner released a statement on Monday evening where he claimed Bowyer's demands exceeded what Charlton were able to offer, but it was then announced on Tuesday morning that Bowyer has signed a one-year extension at The Valley.

Bowyer enjoyed an impressive first season in management at Charlton, as he guided the club to Championship promotion following a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sunderland in the League One play-off final.

This contract extension will come as a big boost for the club, but fans may also feel somewhat confused after the noises that came from the club on Monday evening.

So, how can the last 24 hours at Charlton be summarised in one word? We discuss...

Louie Chandler

"Bizarre.

"Last night it seemed as though Charlton were going to be on the look out for another new manager, with the club's statement appearing to be as much an announcement of his departure than anything else.

"I don't know if it was a case of terrible communication, but the way things did a complete 180 on Tuesday morning was incredibly surprising.

"Just another day at Charlton Athletic though, I suppose!"

Gary Hutchinson

"Destabilising.

"There is an air of it all being a little bit off the cuff; the owner playing games perhaps.

"It must worry the players. Lyle Taylor put a tweet out out suggesting as much.

"This is a side on the up, but events like yesterday only serve to make them look like a basket case. I hope the new owners get control quickly to stop the inevitable collapse."

George Harbey

"One word? That's tough.

"Shambles.

"The whole situation is a shambles in my opinion. Sure, it looks to have been resolved now, but any other club with a normal owner would have never let it get to this stage.

"Bowyer has worked absolute wonders at The Valley considering the problems they have there, and they should be tying him down a lifetime deal given the impact he's made thus far."
