Bolton Wanderers' new era started pretty much the same as the last one finished with a heavy League One defeat.

They were beaten in their final game before the deadline day arrivals, 5-0 by Gillingham, but a trip to Rotherham gave them a chance to start again.

With Keith Hill in charge, the Trotters even took an early lead at the New York Stadium, Thibaud Verlinden bagging on his debut on loan from Stoke. For ten minutes they held a lead, their first of the season in League One.

With little under 15 minutes gone, Ben Wiles levelled for the home side and then the floodgates opened. Freddie Ladapo added a second and Carlton Morris made in 3-1 before half time.

The same pair bagged two in a minute after the restart to leave the game at 5-1, before Jake Hastie added a sixth to round off the scoring.

It wasn't the outcome that they'd hoped for in their first encounter since bringing in nine new players, but  Trotters' fans are a resolute bunch and weren't too downhearted after the defeat.
