What a season it's been in the Championship and from Newcastle winning the division to Rotherham's struggle at the foot of the table, we've seen it all.

Of course, we've still got the play-off final to contend with next week, which will see one of either Reading or Huddersfield Town earn a coveted place in the Premier League after they both won their semi-finals.

But whilst lots of supporters concentrated on the teams at the top of the division, it seems that some of the players towards the bottom end of the division have been slightly put to one side, despite having cracking campaigns themselves.

Believe it or not, we've seen some standout stars down at the likes of Rotherham, Wolves and Bristol City this season, despite their struggles in the league.

So with that in mind, here's a rundown of FLW's "bottom half" team of the Championship season for the 2016/2017 campaign...

GK: Alex Smithies

QPR goalkeeper Alex Smithies has had a superb campaign at QPR, despite their struggles down at the bottom of the campaign for most of the season.

The former Huddersfield Town man continues to turn in good performances down at Loftus Road, and he's a player Ian Holloway will certainly be keen to keep hold of over the summer months.

RB: Matt Doherty

Wolves stalwart Matt Doherty has had another strong campaign down at Molineux, despite their flirtation with the relegation zone during parts of this campaign.

He's featured 41 times for his club this season, scoring five goals and showing time-after-time that he's a reliable and hard-working option in the back four.

CB: Marc Roberts

Barnsley captain Marc Roberts has been superb for the Tykes this season as Paul Heckingbottom's team comfortably finished 14th in the table.

Former Halifax Town man Roberts has really stepped up having made the move to Oakwell in 2015 and going forward, he's one of the biggest players in the squad.

CB: Luke Chambers

Ipswich Town man Luke Chambers has had another strong campaign down at Portman Road and the captain continues to hold together a back-four that leaks goals at the wrong times.

He's played a staggering 230 times in just five games down in East Anglia and his importance to Mick McCarthy's side can't be underestimated in the slightest.

LB: Eric Lichaj

Former Aston Villa man Eric Lichaj left the Midlands to join Nottingham Forest having struggled to break into the first-team at Villa Park.

And its a move that has seriously worked out, with the American becoming a popular, industrious and increasingly solid option for the Reds.

With the team's safety now secured, he's a man that can help them climb the table next season.

LM: Marley Watkins

Marley Watkins has worked his way up from non-league to become quite the star for Barnsley and he's another player that has shone as Barnsley finished in a very respectable 14th place.

The 26-year-old is a hard-working, skilful player who is likely to be tracked over the summer months. He's going to be a huge player for the Tykes to keep hold of.

CM: Jackson Irvine

On one of the smallest budgets in the division, plucky Burton fought their way to safety whilst the likes of Blackburn Rovers faced the drop.

And midfielder Jackson Irvine has been a big part of their campaign and has played superbly well for the Brewers.

The Australian international came from relative obscurity having come in from Ross County but has shone as Clough's men survived.

CM: David Davis

Birmingham City survived by the skin of their teeth this season but whoever you ask, few will knock the performances of David Davis in the middle of the park.

The former Wolves man has endeared himself to the Blues faithful with his gutsy, full-fronted performances and that showed as he raked in the gongs at the end-of-season awards this season.

RM: Helder Costa

Portuguese flanker Helder Costa is one of the most promising players in the division and his quality has showed at times this campaign.

But there's little doubt he's got to work on the consistency of his performances if he's to make it to the very top.

One more season at this level would certainly set him on his way and he has the skill needed to shine for Paul Lambert's team next time out.

ST: Jonathan Kodjia

Despite a slow start to the campaign, Jonathan Kodjia finally came into his own as Villa started to struggle for goals and despite missing out right at the death through injury, he bagged an impressive 19 goals this season.

Steve Bruce will hope to get the former Bristol City man back to full fitness over the coming months and get him really firing once again.

ST: Tammy Abraham

26 goals in your first senior campaign isn't bad going in the slightest and on-loan Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham hasn't done at all badly in announcing himself to the world of football.

Bristol City fans reckon he's the reason they stayed up this season and it's hard to argue with them - he's been superb.

Could we seem him return to Bristol next season? It's unlikely but surely Lee Johnson will try.
