According to the Mirror’s James Nursey, Harry Redknapp is still looking to add at least six players to his Birmingham City squad this summer, ahead of the 2017/18 Sky Bet Championship campaign.

Redknapp helped the Blues to survival on the final day of the Championship season last year, and having agreed a one-year deal at St Andrew’s, the 70-year-old has very different ambitions heading into the new campaign.

Birmingham have already began to reshape their squad, with David Stockdale, Marc Roberts and Cheikh N’Doye all new arrivals at St Andrew’s this summer.

However, Redknapp is keen to add further depth to his squad ahead of next season, and Nursey has revealed the Birmingham manager wants to add at least two wingers, two strikers, a left-back and central defender – believed to be Tommy Elphick.

Birmingham are planning a move for Elphick, but Redknapp faces competition from both Sunderland and Leeds United in the race to sign the defender, who is out-of-favour under Steve Bruce at Aston Villa.

Preston North End’s Jordan Hugill is reportedly a striker on Birmingham’s radar, with Redknapp preparing to return to Deepdale with an improved offer for the 25-year-old.

Birmingham are also set to continue their discussions with Stewart Downing, as they look to bring the winger to St Andrew’s from Middlesbrough.

The Verdict

Redknapp is an experienced manager who knows how to work the transfer market. Even though he was only in charge of Birmingham for a handful of games last season, he will know where his squad needs strengthening.

The addition of Stockdale is particularly impressive, but the Blues still need to add more Championship experience.

The players currently on Redknapp’s radar are exactly what the club needs, and the addition of Downing, Hugill and Elphick would give Birmingham an excellent nucleus heading into next season.
