Gary Rowett is certainly one of the country’s most exciting up and coming managers, thanks to the job he is currently doing at Championship side Birmingham City.

Since taking the reigns, Rowett has steadied the ship at St Andrews and made them into real promotion candidates this season.

The Blues have had an excellent start to this Sky Bet Championship campaign and currently find themselves sitting just outside the play-off spots in 7th place, after taking 6 wins from the opening 16 league games.

Many of the Birmingham faithful are optimistic about their chances of finishing in the top six this year however, the squad may need strengthening in January if they are to keep up their early season form.

Birmingham should look to take a dip into the Scottish market, targeting Scottish giants Rangers in particular who have some very talented players on their books at the moment.

This article is going to take a look at TWO current Rangers players that Gary Rowett could look to poach in January.....

Barrie McKay

Rangers starlet Barrie McKay is certainly someone who should be on Gary Rowett's radar come this January.

McKay is extremely highly rated at Ibrox and appears to have bags and bags of potential.

Despite being just the tender age of 21, McKay has already made over 100 appearances for Rangers, scoring 15 goals in the process from his position out wide.

The youngman is comfortable on either flank, as well as in behind the striker in a number 10 role.

McKay's potential has also been recognised by the Scotland national team for whom he has been capped at under 18, 19 and 21 level.

His form last season for The Gers led to him earning his first full senior cap for the national team, his only one to date.

The wideman certainly isn't short on confidence and is very direct in his approach, he is quick, skilful and has very good technique.

He looks to have every attribute needed to go a long way in the game and could prove to be an excellent signing by Birmingham should they choose to invest.

Martyn Waghorn

Martyn Waghorn is certainly someone who would add great depth and competition to Birmingham's forward areas, he could prove to be a very shrewd acquisition by Gary Rowett as competition in the squad can only be a good thing.

Waghorn has been excellent since his move north of the border to join Rangers, and has netted a remarkable 36 times in 43 games for the club.

Waghorn is of course no stranger to the Championship having represented numerous clubs in England’s second tier including Leicester City, Millwall and Hull City.

His best goalscoring campaign at Championship level came during the 2009-2010 campaign during a loan spell with Leicester City.

Throughout that campaign Waghorn made a total of 43 league appearances for the club, scoring 12 times in the process.
