Birmingham City could be set to swoop for Dutch teenager Bjorn Meijer in January, according to Voetbal International.

The Blues are said to have watched the Netherlands under-19 international during the recent two-week break from club football, in which he featured against Cyprus and and Moldova.

Meijer, a left-wing-back, made his senior debut for Eredivisie side Groningen at the back end of the 2020-21 campaign and has added to that with four appearances this season.

Per Voetbal International's report, Groningen technical director Mark-Jan Fledderus has confirmed that the Midlands club have not made an official approach for Meijer despite their initial interest.

Meijer is contracted to Groningen until the summer of 2023, although they have the option to extend the deal by a year and it would likely take a decent-sized fee to prize the teenager away from his home nation.

That would mean a deal in January is likely difficult to do for Lee Bowyer's side though with the Birmingham manager revealing that there's likely going to be no money available to spend on transfer fees in January.

The Verdict

Meijer is clearly quite a talent if he's starting matches in the Eredivisie and also for Holland's youth squads.

But that will also mean he will require a fee and from what we've heard from Bowyer that will be seemingly impossible when the start of 2022 rolls around - unless Bowyer is bluffing.

It does appear though that Birmingham are targeting the left-wing-back area of the pitch with Jeremie Bela being the man to feature there so far this season which is an unnatural position for him.

Blues fans would be happy if money was spent in that area of the pitch but it would be quite a surprise if they were able to splash out for someone like Meijer.
