Birmingham boss Garry Monk has issued an update regarding the injury sustained by Harlee Dean in his side's 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend.

The result sees the Blues move up to 9th in the Championship table and just two points adrift of a play-off position.

More impressively, Monk's side are now ten games unbeaten and they are the Championship's in-form team going into their crunch match away to Frank Lampard's Derby County on Saturday.

But their win came at a cost as central defender Harlee Dean was forced off with an injury early in the first-half of the win, and Monk revealed exactly what the injury he sustained was.

Quoted by the Birmingham Mail, Monk stated, 'Harlee fell awkwardly on his hip, he felt when he was striding to stride out he couldn’t properly. We had to make that change.'

Dean has been ever-present in the Birmingham side this season and has started every league game so far, but looks set to miss the match against Derby this weekend.

'I don’t think in terms of Harlee’s reaction it doesn’t seem too serious, the good thing is now we have a week to recover and prepare the players.

'I haven’t spoken to the physios yet, I am hoping that’s not too serious.'

Monk admitted he was impressed with Marc Roberts who replaced Dean, and was full of praise for the 28-year-old.

'I thought he did excellently from the moment he walked on. He started to compete with their strikers, how we should have done from the start - and set the tone for us.'

The Verdict:

News of Dean's injury will come as a blow to Birmingham City fans, who will feel that the central defender has played a crucial part in their season so far.

His partnership with Michael Morrison has been a strong one and Dean will be hoping he can return to the side as quickly as possible to help aid their play-off ambitions this season.
