Birmingham City will attempt to re-appoint Chris Hughton as their manager, if results fail to improve under Pep Clotet, The Sun journalist Alan Nixon has reported.

Clotet was only appointed as Birmingham's permanent head coach at the start of last month, having previously taken charge of the club on an interim basis in the aftermath of Garry Monk's sacking in the summer.

Since then, results have taken something of a downward turn for the Blues, with Saturday's FA Cup win over Championship rivals Blackburn bringing an end to a run of six games without a win.

That recent run has seen Birmingham drop to 18th in the Championship table, six points clear of the relegation zone and 12 adrift of the play-offs, and it seems that has got some of the decision makers around St Andrews' considering Clotet's future at the club.

According to Nixon's latest update, the Midlands club will therefore look to bring Hughton back to St Andrews', if they do not start to pick up points sooner rather than later.

Hughton previously spent the 2011/12 season in charge of Birmingham, during which time he guided them to fourth in the Championship, only to be beaten by Blackpool at the semi-final stage. He also oversaw the club's first European campaign for 50 years, before leaving to take charge of Norwich City in June 2012.

The Irishman has been out of work since his sacking by Brighton at the end of last season, and it has been reported since then that he turned down the chance to take over at several Championship clubs, including West Brom, Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough.

The Verdict

This could be a sensible move from Birmingham.

You can understand why there is some concern around St Andrews' about recent form, particularly given they were rather lucky to get that win against Blackburn on Saturday, with league results also likely to take priority over cup games such as that.

Hughton certainly has the pedigree to suggest that he could help to improve things at St Andrews', although given some of the clubs he has apparently turned down recently, you feel it may be difficult for Birmingham to secure his services, and it will be interesting to see if Hughton's past links with the club are a help or a hindrance for them in this particular situation.
