Birmingham City manager Garry Monk says his side got what they deserved after finally claiming their first win of the season against Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon.

Che Adams scored twice in the first half and held onto a one-goal lead after Ezgjan Alioski pulled one back for Marcelo Bielsa's side to end the Whites' unbeaten start to the season.

"I am very proud of the players, they deserve that," Monk said to the BBC after the game.

"We have performed well all season and outplayed a lot of good teams. We [had been] very unfortunate.

"To come here against the league leaders, at a stadium with a fantastic atmosphere, the players were magnificent. I am pleased for them and the fans. We got what we deserved."

The game was not even ten minutes old when Adams opened the scoring as his shot from distance seemed to deceive Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the Leeds net, drifting past him to make it 1-0.

The 22-year-old made it 2-0 20 minutes later firing home after a swift counter-attack to give the home side a mountain to climb to maintain their unbeaten season.

Alioski halved the deficit with five minutes remaining to make the final minutes nervey ones for Monk's men, but they held firm and picked up a well earned three points.

The verdict

It is hard not to be very happy for Monk here, not least on his return to his former employers.

The Blues have played well all season but have lacked a clinical edge needed to turn draws into wins.

They had that today thanks to Che Adams and it is something they will need to maintain.
