Birmingham City’s season seems like it is about to be turned on it’s head as the EFL today confirmed they would receive a nine-point deduction.

Unless appealed, the deduction will come into play this season, sending Garry Monk’s side down from 13th in the table and complete safety, into a relegation dog fight.

Monk had done a brilliant job at the club this season, taking them to within touching distance of the play-offs on more than one occasion despite being pre-season tips to be relegated.

Che Adams and Lukas Jutkiewicz have scored nearly 40 goals between them to bring back some badly needed positive energy to St. Andrews.

That connection with the fans has been one of the biggest plus points of Birmingham’s season but it is possible that this latest news will completely undo that work.

So, how should they be feeling following this update?

Stay with me on this, but I think they should be really excited.

Before, they were heading towards another dull finish to a season but now they really have something to play for and will be set for a thrilling final few weeks.

They will still be favoured considerably higher than Reading, Millwall, Wigan and Rotherham to avoid the drop and will probably do it with relative ease anyway.

It also wipes out the possibility of a deduction next season which would have most-likely proved fatal to their second-tier status.

Take the deduction as a slap on the wrist and strap in for an exciting end to the season.
