Birmingham City are running the rule over two new players on trial, The Birmingham Mail is reporting.

West Ham United goalkeeper Rihards Matrevics and Hawke's Bay United winger Jorge Akers are both on trial with the West Midlands club as they seek to earn a contract.

Matrevics is a towering 19-year-old goalkeeper who is expected to leave West Ham in the summer.

The Latvia under-19 international started the game in Birmingham under-23's win over Bolton and kept a clean sheet as the Blues ran out 3-0 winners.

With just two Development Squad games to his name this season for West Ham, Matrevics could be moving to Birmingham this summer.

Akers also impressed against Bolton, scoring the second goal of the game from outside the box.

The 18-year-old New Zealander plays as a winger and has impressed after just finishing a season with Hawke's Bay United in the ISPS Handa Premiership.

Both Matrevics and Akers were watched by Birmingham officials as they weigh up a possible move.

There is a third player being considered too.

Francis Amartey remains on trial with Birmingham, having struck a hat-trick against Shanghai SIPG under-20s in a recent match for the young Blues.

Amartey started on the bench against Bolton in this youth team game.

The Verdict

Matrevics is just 19 and impressed at under-18 level for West Ham, meaning he could be worth a gamble. Akers looks like he has raw talent, although they will probably need to see more of the Kiwi before deciding whether he is good enough to make it in England. Meanwhile, Amartey clearly has raw goal scoring talent but he needs to prove consistency before being offered a deal.
