Birmingham City have secured the service of Charlie Lakin until the summer of 2021, with the midfielder triggering an appearance-based clause in his previous deal.

An announcement has come from Birmingham’s official website today confirming that Lakin reached a set number of appearances earlier in the season that triggered this deal, which has now been ratified and registered by the governing bodies.

That deal will run until the summer of 2021, although Blues have also confirmed that they have a year’s option on the contract.

Lakin has been a part of the senior setup at Birmingham under Garry Monk, after making a debut in January of 2018.

Monk has handed him nine appearances across all competitions this season, with eight of those coming in the Championship.

However, the last of those came back in November’s Second City derby, with a thigh injury leaving the 19-year-old on the sidelines for an extended period.

Now, he’s back in training with Monk’s squad, looking to get back amongst the first-team action during the run-in.

The Verdict

Lakin is a player that’s highly-rated at Birmingham, with Monk clearly a big fan.

After debuting last season under Steve Cotterill, Monk has taken a shine to the teenager, who got his chance earlier in the season.

Securing his long-term service is going to delight Monk, who can now start planning a future around the talented midfielder.
