Birmingham City have completed the signing of Barnsley defender Marc Roberts, the Birmingham Mail has confirmed.

The big defender has joined the Blues on a five-year contract, for a fee reportedly thought to be in the region of £3.5m.

Roberts becomes manager Harry Redknapp's second signing of the summer, and the former Spurs gaffer is firmly on course with his rebuild job, after capturing goalkeeper David Stockdale just a few weeks ago.

26-year-old Roberts has become one of the star men in the Championship and has been key for Barnsley as they have enjoyed a rise back to the Championship, where he played a vital role next to Alfie Mawson in their promotion winning season from League One two years ago.

However, his stock has grown, and this has led to plenty of interest, with now Birmingham winning the race for the impressive defender.

Roberts was signed by Barnsley from non-league, and he is yet another example in the football league of someone been given a chance at a higher level and grabbing it with both hands. Roberts will be hoping to help Birmingham challenge for the playoffs, while Barnsley will once again look to reinvest the funds raised.
