A five game losing run has seen Steve Cotterill lose his job with Garry Monk brought in to replace him.

Birmingham's owners have made mistakes in the past with regards to the hiring and firing of managers. Gary Rowett sticks out as the main example because he was sacked in December 2016 with the team challenging for the play-offs in seventh place; they ended up finishing that season just above the relegation places.

Gianfranco Zola was Rowett's replacement and he failed to produce results while Harry Redknapp invested heavily on his squad with little return.

Cotterill had to work with what he had, so he was unable to make the squad his own. This obviously limited his ability to produce results because he only won six league games out of a potential 24, and he left the team in 22nd place, which is where they were when he came in.

The five game losing run, that ended his tenure at the club, contained a must-win home match against Barnsley as well games against Millwall and Nottingham Forest where they should have at least earned a point in one of those considering the calibre of opposition.

Currently, the club have a good chance of avoiding relegation as they sit two points from safety although Barnsley and Hull City immediately above them in the table both have a game in hand. Cotterill appeared to be taking them nowhere and Monk was available with the move done swiftly and efficiently, so this could end up being the best club that the owners have made in regards to managers.

Avoiding relegation will be the immediate priority as well as how this decision will be judged, but this could be a great move in the long run because of Monk's ability at this level.
