Birmingham City’s chances of keeping player look slim as clubs make offers

Midfielder Viv Solomon-Otabor is set to turn down a new contract at Birmingham City, and also reject a move to Portsmouth, All Nigeria Soccer has reported.

Despite the midfielder spending the second half of the season on loan at League One Portsmouth, Birmingham recently confirmed that they had offered Solomon-Otabor a new 12 month contract at St Andrew’s, although it has now been reported that the 23-year-old will reject that offer.

It is thought that Solomon-Otabor is not keen on a return to Fratton Park, where he scored once in ten appearances during his loan move in the second of the season.

Despite that, Solomon-Otabor is in a strong position to find a club for next season, and is reportedly in talks with several sides who have made offers to the midfielder.

Solomon-Otabor has made just 40 appearances since breaking into Birmingham’s first team in 2015, and has also spent time on loan at both Bolton and Blackpool since then.

The verdict

It is understandable that Solomon-Otabor will turn down Birmingham’s offer.

The midfielder hasn’t got the opportunities he will have wanted during his time there, and it may not be a huge loss for Birmingham in that respect.

That he has turned down Portsmouth feels like more of a surprise, since their desire to bring him back to Fratton Park suggests that he may have had more opportunities there, and in a side expected to compete for promotion no less.
