It appears that Birmingham City will not be bringing in Dwight Gayle this summer, with the striker still at Newcastle United.

The 28-year-old has struggled to establish himself as a regular on Tyneside and the arrival of club-record signing Joelinton means that opportunities are going to be hard to come by again for the ex-Crystal Palace man.

Therefore, another switch to the Championship seems likely and most clubs in the league would surely be interested in Gayle, who hit 24 goals for West Brom in the second-tier last season.

But, the financial aspects of the deal are an issue, with Chronicle Live revealing that Stoke City have been priced out of a move.

And, reporter Brian Dick has stated on Twitter that a move to Blues also doesn't appear to be on the cards.

"Have been told it is 'very doubtful' Dwight Gayle will be coming to #bcfc."

Whilst it may have seemed an ambitious move, Blues have made a big statement signing in Ivan Sunjic this summer and they should have funds available after Che Adams left for Southampton.

The Verdict

This is a shame for Birmingham fans as Gayle would have been an outstanding signing, although realistically most wouldn't have expected them to have a chance of bringing him in.

The striker will probably feel he deserves a chance in the Premier League but even if that doesn't come with Newcastle he is only going to move to a top Championship side and Blues aren't at that level yet.

Financially it would have been a huge ask too, with Gayle's wages known to be significant.

A new number nine is needed at St. Andrew's though and it will be interesting to see who they bring in to replace Adams.
