Birmingham City have confirmed that winger Jefferson Montero will be out for several weeks with a thigh injury.

The 30-year-old suffered the injury against Stoke City at the weekend and had to be taken off on a stretcher after just 29 minutes of the 2-1 win at St Andrew's.

Montero joined Birmingham on a season-long loan from Swansea City last month and was making his first start for his new club when he suffered the injury.

The winger made his debut for the Blues in the 2-0 win over Barnsley at St Andrew's and impressed fans with his performance.

He was unable to play in the 3-0 defeat to Swansea due to the term's of his loan, but was handed his first start by manager Pep Clotet for the win over Stoke last weekend.

The club also confirmed that midfielder Jacques Maghoma has returned to full training after he suffered a calf injury during the win at Brentford on the opening day of the season.

Birmingham are currently ninth in the Championship table after taking eleven points from their opening six league matches.

The Blues will be looking to build on their positive start to the season against second-placed Charlton Athletic in their first game after the international break.

The Verdict

This is a huge blow for Birmingham. Montero is a very talented player and he really impressed fans with his performance off the bench against Barnsley.

He could have been a great signing on loan, but at seems as though it could now be months before he's able to make an impact at St Andrew's.

On the positive side, Maghoma was an important player for Birmingham last season, so it's good news that he's returned to full training and hopefully he'll be able to return to action after the international break.
