The former West Bromwich Albion striker is the first signing of what is expected to be a busy summer for manager Gary Rowett but Jones is likely to partner Denny Johnstone in the under 21s team next season as they loom to progress beyond their success this season.

The 20-year-old agreed a two year deal with the West Midlands club with the option of a further year and he has expressed his desire to shine at the Blues.

He said to the Birmingham Mail: "I am thrilled to be a Birmingham City player. I’m here for at least two years and my aim is to get in the first team as soon as possible."

“I’m here for at least two years and my aim is to get in the first team as soon as possible.

“At my age and the way I am progressing I feel that I can break into the team and hopefully score some goals."

During his years at the Baggies, Jones failed to make a single first team appearance in the Premier League and he now believes it is his time to shine in the second tier of English football.

“I think I am ready to play Championship football now, I just need to be given the chance.

“Obviously I haven’t had an experience at that level but you don’t know until you are given the chance and I am raring to go."

The 20 year old also admitted that he has his heights set quite high and that he hopes he can help Birmingham return to the Premier League.

He continued: “Down the line, just like every young player I’d like to play in the Premier League and play at as high a level as I possibly can. That’s got to be my aim.”

Birmingham City fans, do you think Alex Jones will be somebody that will challenge for a first team place next year or do you think he isn't ready for the championship just yet?
