Birmingham City are edging closer to completing a deal to sign former Barcelona youngster Alen Halilovic on a free transfer.

It is reported by BBC West Midlands' Richard Wilford that a medical has been completed, with the midfielder also agreeing terms with the Championship.

Halilovic started his career with Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb, and caught the eye with a number of impressive performances at youth level.

These strong showings didn't go unnoticed either, with the midfielder forcing his way into the Dinamo Zagreb first-team, where he went on to make 61 appearances for the club, whilst chipping in with eight goals and four assists.

He then moved to Spanish side Barcelona on a five-year deal in May 2014, and made his first-team debut for the club against Elche CF, when he replaced Adama Traoré as a second-half substitute.

That proved to be his only first-team appearance for the club, as Halilovic spent a season out on loan with Sporting Gijon in search of regular game time in senior football.

Halilivic then signed a four-year deal with German side Hamburger SV, for a fee believed to be in the region of £5.5million. But it was a similar story here, as the midfielder struggled for consistent game time with them, and spent a season out on loan with Spanish side Las Palmas.

The Croatian then left Hamburger SV on a free transfer in the summer of 2018, and moved to AC Milan, in a somewhat surprising move after his lack of impact out on loan with Las Palmas.

He made three appearances for the Italian giants before signing for Belgian side Standard Liège on loan for the remainder of the 2018/19 season.

There was an option to buy Halilovic permanently at the end of the season for Standard Liège, but they opted to not exercise that, with the midfielder going on to sign for Dutch side SC Heerenveen, where his loan spell was cut short due to the off-the-field problems in Europe.

He is now a free-agent, but that seems as though it won't be the case for much longer, as he looks to make a positive impact with Aitor Karanka's side in the Championship.
