Birmingham City are reportedly set to offer troubled striker Saido Berahino another chance in the Championship and invite him for a trial at the club.

The 25-year-old had an extremely turbulent time at Stoke City and the club are understood to have told him they were cancelling his contract earlier this summer.

Birmingham City are searching for a replacement for Che Adams, who joined Southampton for £15 million earlier this week, and, according to the Sun, the Blues are willing to offer Berahino a trial.

The report suggests that manager Pep Clotet believes Berahino could be a steal if he can get him back to form and that the Blues are hoping he will come to pre-season training over the next few days.

The Burundi international was a product of the West Bromwich Albion academy and made his name as a striker at the Hawthorns, scoring 36 goals in 121 appearances for the Baggies.

He joined Stoke in January 2017 but due to a number of attitude and off the field issues saw his career stutter at the Potters.

Verdict

This is an unusual one but it could certainly work out for the Blues.

Clotet is correct. If he can get the Burundi international back to his best he would be an asset to the Blues but that is a huge if, given what he has shown at the Potters.

Financially it is low risk, the striker is unlikely to have many other options in the Championship and should be available on a reasonably low wage.

However, Berahino clearly has a poor attitude and by bringing him into the changing room, Clotet runs the risk of destabilising the squad, which may already be slightly unstable following Garry Monk's exit.
