Garry Monk has revealed that Birmingham could welcome back midfield duo Craig Gardner and Maikel Kieftenbeld as they seek a first win of the season at Elland Road on Saturday.

The Blues picked up a good point against Sheffield United on Wednesday, and whilst it was a good result in isolation, it extends their winless run to eight games and leaves them in 20th position.

And, things don't get any easier for the West Midlands side, with a trip to top-of-the-table Leeds United up next - Monk's former side.

However, he told the club's official site they will be able to welcome back Gardner and Kieftenbeld to add more competition to the midfield:

"Craig Gardner is back in training today and Kief is back out on the grass today. They both picked up knocks. Kief's was in the last game (against West Brom) and Gards in training.

"We're very hopeful that both will be fully available for training again tomorrow."

That means that Blues could head to Elland Road with a fully fit squad, excluding long-term absentees David Davis and Isaac Vassell.

The Verdict

This is good news for Blues, particularly as they are about to take on Leeds, so Kieftenbeld in particular could be vital with his defensive discipline in midfield.

Either way, Monk isn't blessed with a big squad so he needs every player fit in what is a tough time for the club.

They've played well this season, but they need to get that first win and the two players will hope to play a part at Elland Road as they look for three points.
