Given that the transfer window has shut, managers will be searching for free agents if they feel the need to add to their squad.

One player available is Sebastien Bassong, who was released last year by Norwich City, and he has recently completed a trial at Birmingham City.

The left-footed defender had a spell with Redknapp at Tottenham, so knows the Blues manager extremely well.

Given the fact Redknapp recruited several defenders before the window shut, a deal for the Cameroon international would've perhaps been surprising, but the boss wanted to check him out nonetheless.

However, Birmingham City confirmed via their official Twitter account that his trial period is now over.

Although they could still sign Bassong, the impression you get is that no deal is forthcoming.

He has been training with the club for the past two weeks and featured for Birmingham U23s in a victory against Watford U23s, and was thought to have impressed Redknapp.

Another free agent training with the club is Rolf Feltscher, a Venezuelan international.

The Verdict

Sebastien Bassong may have been a reasonable acquisition for Birmingham on a short-term basis. With Marc Roberts, Harlee Dean and Michael Morrison available at centre-half, he would provide reasonable cover.

As well as that, he brings more balance to the defence given he can play comfortably on the left side, and also presents Redknapp with the option to go for a back three.

However, having spent two weeks at the club, the manager will be in the best position to decide whether he needs Bassong, who might demand big wages given he joined previous club Norwich in the Premier League.
